However, requesting a quotation for a sapphire window involves more than simply providing its diameter and thickness.

Crystal orientation, dimensional tolerance, flatness, parallelism, surface quality, clear aperture, edge geometry and optical coating can all affect manufacturability, optical performance, inspection requirements, lead time and cost.

For buyers, engineers and sourcing teams, a complete RFQ helps a sapphire window manufacturer understand the actual application and provide a more accurate quotation without repeated technical clarification.

This guide explains the key specifications that should be included when requesting a custom sapphire window quote.

1. Start with the Sapphire Window Shape

The first step is to define the basic geometry.

Custom sapphire windows may be manufactured in many configurations, including:

Yuvarlak safir pencereler

Square sapphire windows

Rectangular sapphire windows

Ring-shaped sapphire windows

Sapphire windows with center holes

Sapphire windows with multiple holes

Stepped sapphire windows

Sapphire windows with slots

Sapphire windows with chamfers

Custom irregular sapphire components

For a simple circular window, provide the diameter and thickness.

For rectangular parts, specify:

Length × Width × Thickness

For complex geometries, a 2D drawing in PDF format and preferably a 3D CAD file should be included with the RFQ.

Do not rely only on a photograph when dimensional accuracy is important. A technical drawing significantly reduces the possibility of misunderstanding during quotation and manufacturing.

2. Specify Dimensions and Dimensional Tolerances

A useful sapphire window RFQ should include both the nominal dimensions and the allowable tolerances.

Örneğin:

Parametre

Example Requirement

Çap

Ø50.00 mm

Diameter tolerance

±0.05 mm

Kalınlık

2.00 mm

Thickness tolerance

±0.05 mm

Kenar pahı

0.2 × 45°

Miktar

50 pcs

The tolerances above are only an RFQ example and should not automatically be applied to every sapphire window.

The required tolerance depends on how the window will be mounted and how critical the mechanical interface is.

A sapphire protective cover bonded into a housing may have very different dimensional requirements from a precision optical window installed in a tightly controlled mechanical mount.

Gereksiz yere sıkı toleranslardan kaçının

A common RFQ mistake is specifying the tightest possible tolerance for every dimension.

Tighter tolerances can increase:

Machining difficulty

Denetim şartları

Manufacturing time

Production cost

Risk of rejection

Instead, distinguish between critical dimensions ve non-critical dimensions.

If only the outer diameter controls the fit with a metal housing, for example, that dimension may require a tighter tolerance while other features can remain more flexible.

3. Define the Sapphire Crystal Orientation

Synthetic sapphire is single-crystal aluminum oxide, and crystallographic orientation can matter in optical and mechanical applications.

Yaygın yönelimler arasında şunlar yer alır:

C düzlemi safir

A-düzlemi safir

M-düzlemi safir

R-düzlemli safir

Random orientation, when orientation is not critical

For many optical window applications, C düzlemi safir is commonly specified because the c-axis is perpendicular to the window surface and this configuration can be advantageous where birefringence effects must be controlled.

However, not every protective sapphire window requires a specific crystal orientation.

If orientation does not affect your optical, mechanical or assembly requirements, indicate this clearly in the RFQ. Allowing the manufacturer more flexibility may simplify material selection and reduce unnecessary cost.

A clear specification might read:

Material: Optical-grade synthetic sapphire
Orientation: C-plane, c-axis perpendicular to polished surface

or simply:

Orientation: Not critical

when appropriate.

4. Specify Flatness

Flatness describes how much an optical surface deviates from an ideal plane.

It is particularly important when the sapphire window is located in an imaging or laser optical path.

Common optical drawings may specify flatness using fractions of a wavelength, such as:

1 λ

λ/2

λ/4

λ/10

The measurement wavelength should also be stated, because a specification such as λ/4 is incomplete without defining the reference wavelength.

A typical drawing notation might therefore look like:

Surface Flatness: λ/4 @ 632.8 nm over clear aperture

Higher precision is not automatically better for every project. Precision sapphire optics can be produced with demanding flatness specifications, but achievable performance depends strongly on diameter, thickness, aspect ratio, polishing method and other geometric factors. Commercial sapphire optics are offered across substantially different flatness grades depending on the intended application.

For a protective window in front of an industrial camera, for example, extremely tight flatness may not be necessary.

For a laser or high-resolution imaging system, it may be much more important.

5. Do Not Confuse Flatness with Parallelism

Flatness and parallelism describe different characteristics.

Düzlük concerns the shape of an individual optical surface.

Paralellik concerns the angular relationship between the two opposite surfaces.

Parallelism may be specified in:

Arc minutes

Arc seconds

For applications where beam deviation or wedge must be tightly controlled, parallelism can become an important specification.

Commercial optical-grade sapphire windows demonstrate that parallelism requirements can range from relatively relaxed values to only a few arc-seconds for high-precision products.

If the application is sensitive to beam deviation, the RFQ should clearly state the required parallelism or wedge tolerance.

6. Define Surface Quality

Surface quality is another critical specification for optical sapphire windows.

In many optical drawings, it is expressed using a scratch-dig designation such as:

80-50

60-40

40-20

20-10

10-5

Lower numbers generally indicate a more demanding cosmetic surface requirement.

For example, a protective sapphire cover for an industrial sensor may not require the same surface quality as a sapphire window used in a precision laser system.

High-precision commercial sapphire windows can be specified at levels such as 20-10 or 10-5, while less demanding applications may use more economical specifications.

When sending an RFQ, specify both surfaces separately if their requirements differ.

Örneğin:

Surface A: 20-10 scratch-dig
Surface B: 40-20 scratch-dig

This can be useful when only one side faces the critical optical path.

7. Specify Surface Roughness When Necessary

Surface roughness and scratch-dig are not the same specification.

Scratch-dig primarily addresses visible surface imperfections under a defined inspection system, while surface roughness describes microscopic texture.

For precision optical, laser, bonding or coating applications, surface roughness may need to be specified separately.

It may be expressed as:

Ra ≤ X nm

Do not automatically request extremely low surface roughness unless the application requires it.

For many conventional protective windows, scratch-dig and optical performance specifications may be more relevant than an ultra-low Ra requirement.

For specialized laser, high-power, bonding or optical coating applications, however, roughness can become considerably more important.

8. Define the Clear Aperture

The açık açıklık is the usable optical area of the window over which specified optical characteristics must be maintained.

This specification is easy to overlook.

A customer may order a 50 mm diameter window but only require optical performance over the central 45 mm.

The outer region may be used for mounting, bonding or mechanical retention.

A typical specification might be:

Clear Aperture: ≥90% of diameter

or:

Clear Aperture: Ø46 mm minimum

Precision sapphire windows are commonly supplied with defined clear apertures rather than requiring the full physical diameter to satisfy every optical specification.

Defining the actual usable optical area can prevent unnecessary manufacturing difficulty.

9. Describe the Edge Requirements

Sapphire is extremely hard, but edge design remains important for handling, assembly and mechanical reliability.

The RFQ should state whether the window requires:

Sharp edge

Edge break

Chamfer

Bevel

Radius

Ground edge

Parlatılmış kenar

Stepped edge

Örneğin:

Edge: 0.2 mm × 45° chamfer, both sides

For components that will be bonded or installed into a housing, include the mating dimensions and indicate which surfaces or edges are critical.

Custom sapphire components can also incorporate holes, slots, steps and specialized mounting profiles when the application requires them.

10. Specify Holes, Slots and Other Machined Features

Modern sapphire windows are not always simple flat discs.

Some projects require:

Central holes

Off-center holes

Multiple holes

Slots

Counterbores

Steps

Notches

Internal openings

Special edge profiles

When these features are present, provide:

Delik çapı

Position

Position tolerance

Hole-to-edge distance

Through or blind feature

Chamfer requirement

Edge chipping requirement

Surface finish requirements

A drawing is strongly recommended.

The relationship between hole diameter, material thickness and distance from the edge can significantly affect manufacturability.

If the geometry is still under development, asking the manufacturer for a DFM review before finalizing the drawing can help avoid unnecessarily difficult features.

11. Define the Required Wavelength Range

The required optical wavelength is especially important when an optical coating will be applied.

Instead of simply writing:

AR coated

provide the actual operating wavelength or wavelength band.

Örneğin:

Operating wavelength: 400–700 nm

or:

Laser wavelength: 1064 nm

or:

Operating band: 1530–1570 nm

The coating should be designed around the optical system rather than selected independently from it.

Other useful information may include:

Geliş açısı

Required average transmission

Maximum reflectance

Polarization requirement

Operating environment

12. Specify the Sapphire Window Coating

A sapphire window may be supplied uncoated or with a functional optical coating.

Common requirements can include:

Anti-reflection coating

Broadband AR coating

Narrowband AR coating

Dual-band coating

Protective coating

Conductive coating, for specialized applications

When requesting an AR-coated sapphire window, provide at least:

Dalga boyu aralığı
Geliş açısı
Transmission or reflectance target
Coated surface
Operating environment

Örneğin:

AR coating both sides
Wavelength: 1064 nm
AOI: 0°
Ravg: ≤0.5% per surface

The numbers above are an example RFQ format rather than a universal coating specification.

Actual achievable coating performance should be confirmed for the wavelength range, geometry, coating design and production requirements of the project.

13. Include Environmental Requirements

One major reason designers select sapphire is its combination of optical performance and mechanical durability.

Sapphire is used for windows exposed to demanding conditions because of its hardness, chemical resistance and ability to operate across challenging environments.

If your sapphire window will experience unusual conditions, tell the manufacturer during the RFQ stage.

Relevant information may include:

High temperature

Low temperature

Rapid thermal cycling

High external pressure

Vacuum

Abrasive particles

Salt spray

Chemical exposure

Outdoor weathering

Laser exposure

High humidity

These conditions may influence thickness, edge geometry, coating selection, inspection and mounting recommendations.

For pressure windows especially, do not select thickness from optical requirements alone. Pressure, unsupported aperture, mounting method, safety factor and operating environment should all be evaluated.

14. State Inspection and Documentation Requirements

Buyers should define required inspection documents before production instead of requesting additional documentation after the parts have already been manufactured.

Possible requirements include:

Dimensional inspection report

Yüzey kalitesi denetimi

Düzlük ölçümü

Parallelism measurement

Surface roughness report

Coating transmission curve

Material certificate

Crystal orientation verification

Certificate of Conformance

Batch traceability

Custom inspection report

Not every order requires every document.

For prototype or general industrial applications, a basic inspection report may be sufficient.

For aerospace, semiconductor, laser or other controlled applications, more comprehensive traceability may be required.

15. Provide Quantity and Forecast Demand

Always include the required quantity.

Örneğin:

Prototype: 5 pcs
Initial order: 50 pcs
Estimated annual demand: 1,000 pcs

This is much more useful than simply requesting:

“Please quote your best price.”

Quantity affects:

Raw material planning

Tooling strategy

Production setup

Inspection method

Paketleme

Cost per piece

If the project could move from prototypes to mass production, tell the supplier at the beginning.

The manufacturer may recommend different production approaches depending on the expected volume.

Custom Sapphire Window RFQ Example

A well-prepared RFQ might look like this:

Product: Özel Safir Optik Pencere
Material: Optical-grade synthetic sapphire
Shape: Yuvarlak
Orientation: C-plane
Çap: Ø50.00 ±0.05 mm
Kalınlık: 2.00 ±0.05 mm
Flatness: λ/4 @ 632.8 nm over clear aperture
Parallelism: ≤30 arc sec
Surface Quality: 20-10 scratch-dig
Clear Aperture: ≥90%
Edge: 0.2 × 45° chamfer
Coating: AR coating on both sides
Operating Wavelength: 1064 nm
AOI: 0°
Quantity: 20 pcs prototype, estimated 500 pcs/year
Documentation: Dimensional inspection report and coating curve
Application: Optical sensor protection

Attach a PDF drawing or CAD file whenever possible.

With this information, a sapphire window manufacturer can evaluate the project far more efficiently than with dimensions alone.

Sapphire Window RFQ Checklist

Before sending your inquiry, check whether you have provided:

Material / sapphire grade

Şekil

Diameter or length and width

Kalınlık

Dimensional tolerances

Kristal yönelimi

Düzlük

Parallelism or wedge

Yüzey kalitesi

Surface roughness, if required

Net açıklık

Edge or chamfer specification

Hole / slot / step dimensions

Optical wavelength

AR coating requirement

Geliş açısı

Environmental conditions

Denetim şartları

Miktar

Annual forecast

Drawing or CAD file

Not every project needs all of these specifications. The objective is to define the parameters that genuinely affect your application.

What If You Do Not Know All the Specifications?

It is common for buyers to know the application but not every optical specification.

In that situation, do not guess.

Instead, provide the information you already know, including:

Application + dimensions + operating wavelength + environment + quantity

and ask the manufacturer to review the design.

Örneğin:

We need a sapphire protection window for a 1064 nm optical sensor. The approximate diameter is 40 mm and the available thickness is 2–3 mm. The window will be installed outdoors. Please recommend suitable orientation, surface quality, flatness and AR coating specifications.

This gives the engineering team enough context to discuss a practical manufacturing solution.

SSS

What information is required to quote a custom sapphire window?

At minimum, provide the shape, dimensions, thickness, quantity and application. For precision optical windows, also specify crystal orientation, dimensional tolerances, flatness, parallelism, surface quality, clear aperture, wavelength and coating requirements.

Is C-plane required for every sapphire optical window?

No. C-plane is commonly used in optical window applications, particularly where crystal orientation and birefringence are relevant, but some protective or mechanical applications may not require a specified orientation. The correct choice depends on the optical system and application.

What scratch-dig should I specify for a sapphire window?

There is no single correct value for every application. General protective windows may tolerate a less demanding surface specification, while precision imaging and laser optics may require 20-10, 10-5 or another controlled surface quality. Avoid specifying a tighter grade than the system actually needs.

Does tighter flatness increase sapphire window cost?

Generally, tighter optical tolerances require more controlled polishing and inspection. The cost impact also depends on window diameter, thickness, aspect ratio and quantity. Use the optical requirement required by the system rather than automatically requesting the tightest available specification.

Can sapphire windows have holes or special shapes?

Yes. Custom sapphire components can be manufactured with holes, slots, steps, chamfers, rings and other special geometries. Complex designs should be submitted with a detailed engineering drawing for manufacturability review.

Can sapphire windows be supplied with AR coating?

Yes. Anti-reflection coatings can be designed for specific wavelengths or wavelength ranges. Provide the operating wavelength, angle of incidence and required optical performance when requesting a quotation.

Request a Custom Sapphire Window Quote

A complete RFQ helps shorten technical communication and allows the manufacturer to evaluate material selection, machining, polishing, coating and inspection requirements before production.

If you are developing a custom sapphire optical window, send us your drawing, dimensions, crystal orientation, optical specifications, coating requirements and required quantity.

If some specifications have not yet been finalized, provide the application, operating wavelength and environmental conditions.
