Provide a Dimensioned Sapphire Window Drawing

The best starting point is a 2D engineering drawing in PDF format.

A STEP, IGES or other 3D model can be included for reference, especially for windows with steps, grooves, holes or irregular contours. However, the 2D drawing should remain the primary document for dimensions, tolerances and inspection requirements.

The ISO 10110 series standardizes how design and functional requirements for optical elements can be presented in technical drawings. ISO 10110-1 covers the general drawing layout, while other parts address characteristics such as surface imperfections and optical material properties.

At minimum, the drawing should show:

Overall diameter, length and width

ความหนาหลังเสร็จสิ้น

Dimensional tolerances

รูรับแสง

Edge thickness where applicable

Chamfers, bevels or corner radii

Holes, grooves, slots, steps or recesses

Coated and uncoated surfaces

Datum surfaces

Critical inspection dimensions

For a circular window, specify whether the diameter refers to the finished optical part or a dimension before coating, metallization or assembly.

For rectangular or square sapphire windows, include corner-radius requirements. A perfectly sharp internal or external corner may be impractical or more likely to chip during manufacturing and assembly.

2. Define the Sapphire Material and Crystal Orientation

The RFQ should clearly state that the required material is synthetic single-crystal sapphire, also known as single-crystal aluminum oxide.

The required crystal orientation should also be identified when it affects the optical or mechanical design.

Common orientations may include:

แซฟไฟร์แบบ C-plane

แซฟไฟร์แบบ A-plane

แซฟไฟร์แบบ R-plane

แซฟไฟร์แบบ M-plane

Custom off-axis orientation

For many general protective-window applications, the customer may allow the manufacturer to recommend the orientation. However, orientation should not be left undefined in polarization-sensitive, birefringence-sensitive or specialized optical systems.

Sapphire is an anisotropic crystal, and its optical response depends on the relationship between the light path, polarization and crystallographic axis. Research on synthetic sapphire also discusses ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices and the role of crystal orientation in optical measurements.

The RFQ should therefore include one of the following statements:

Crystal orientation: C-plane

Crystal orientation: A-plane

Crystal orientation: supplier recommendation acceptable

Crystal axis orientation relative to the drawing datum: as specified

Orientation certificate required: yes or no

When orientation is critical, indicate the permitted angular deviation and whether an orientation inspection report is required.

3. Specify the Finished Dimensions and Tolerances

The drawing should distinguish nominal dimensions from acceptable tolerances.

Important dimensional requirements may include:

Outside diameter

Length and width

Center thickness

Edge thickness

Diameter tolerance

Thickness tolerance

ความสมมาตร

Wedge

Perpendicularity

Concentricity

ตำแหน่งรู

ความสูงของขั้นบันได

Groove width and depth

Avoid using extremely tight tolerances by default.

A tolerance should be based on the functional requirement of the assembly. Unnecessarily tight tolerances can increase polishing time, inspection time, manufacturing risk and cost without improving the actual performance of the product.

For example, a sapphire cover protecting a camera sensor may not require the same parallelism or transmitted wavefront specification as a window installed in a precision laser path.

When a dimension is essential for sealing, alignment or assembly, mark it as a critical dimension on the drawing.

4. State the Clear Aperture

The clear aperture is the area through which the optical beam or imaging field must pass without being affected by edge chips, bevels, mounting features or coating exclusion zones.

The RFQ should specify:

Clear-aperture diameter or dimensions

Whether the clear aperture is centered

Allowed coating exclusion near the edge

Whether cosmetic requirements apply outside the clear aperture

Whether both sides have the same clear aperture

A typical drawing note might read:

Clear aperture: central 90% of the finished diameter.

However, the required value should be based on the optical design and mounting arrangement rather than copied from a generic specification.

For an irregularly shaped sapphire window, show the clear aperture directly on the drawing.

5. Define Surface Quality

Surface quality describes allowable visible imperfections such as scratches and digs on an optical surface.

The RFQ should state:

Required scratch-dig value or applicable inspection standard

Which surfaces are optical surfaces

Whether requirements apply only inside the clear aperture

Whether cosmetic inspection outside the clear aperture is required

Lighting and magnification requirements if nonstandard

Surface-quality requirements should match the application.

An imaging window, laser window or inspection-system window may require stricter cosmetic quality than a protective viewport used only for process observation.

Do not specify “no scratches” or “perfect surface.” These phrases are difficult to inspect consistently and do not establish an objective acceptance criterion.

A measurable inspection specification reduces disputes between the buyer and the supplier.

6. Specify Surface Flatness or Transmitted Wavefront Requirements

Surface flatness controls the shape of an individual polished surface. Transmitted wavefront error evaluates the optical effect of the complete window as light passes through it.

These are related but different requirements.

The RFQ should indicate:

Surface flatness requirement

Measurement wavelength

Clear aperture used for measurement

Transmitted wavefront requirement, when applicable

Whether the specification applies before or after coating

Whether an interferogram is required

For a protective window that does not form part of the imaging path, a stringent transmitted wavefront specification may not be necessary.

For laser, imaging, interferometric or precision sensing applications, transmitted wavefront performance may be more important than surface flatness alone.

The buyer should specify the functional optical requirement and allow the manufacturer to confirm the most appropriate inspection method.

7. Define Surface Roughness

Surface roughness can influence scatter, coating adhesion and optical performance.

The RFQ should include:

Maximum surface roughness

Measurement unit

Measurement method

Sampling area

Whether the requirement applies to one or both surfaces

Whether roughness data or a test report is required

A generic note such as “optical polish” may not be sufficient for a high-performance optical system.

At the same time, specifying an exceptionally low roughness for a basic protective viewport can unnecessarily increase manufacturing cost.

The surface roughness requirement should therefore be connected to the wavelength, optical sensitivity and coating process.

8. Identify the Operating Wavelength Range

The manufacturer needs to know which wavelengths must pass through the sapphire window.

The RFQ should identify:

Operating wavelength or wavelength range

Laser wavelength, where applicable

Broadband or narrowband operation

มุมตกกระทบ

Polarization state

Minimum transmission requirement

Maximum reflection requirement

Whether the value applies to each surface or the complete coated window

ตัวอย่างได้แก่:

Visible inspection range

Near-infrared sensing range

Specific laser wavelength

Ultraviolet detection range

Broadband optical monitoring

The wavelength range is particularly important when an anti-reflective coating is required.

A coating optimized for one wavelength may not provide the required performance across a broad spectral range.

9. Provide Complete Coating Requirements

Do not request only an “AR coating” without additional details.

A coating RFQ should state:

Coating type

Operating wavelength or spectral band

มุมตกกระทบ

การแบ่งขั้ว

Required average or maximum reflectance

Required transmission

Coated surface identification

Uncoated edge or masking requirements

Environmental durability requirements

Laser power or energy conditions

Cleaning method

Applicable coating standard

The ISO 9211 series provides a standardized framework for specifying optical coatings. ISO 9211-2 addresses optical properties and spectral characterization, while ISO 9211-3 covers environmental durability. Separate parts establish minimum requirements for antireflecting coatings and coatings used for laser optics.

For a laser application, also provide:

Continuous-wave or pulsed operation

Average power

Peak power

Pulse energy

Pulse duration

Repetition rate

Beam diameter

Beam profile

Required laser-induced damage threshold

Test wavelength and test method

The coating supplier cannot properly evaluate laser-damage risk using wavelength alone.

10. Describe the Edge Geometry

Sapphire is hard and wear-resistant, but edge geometry still matters during machining, handling and assembly.

The drawing should define:

ขนาดมุมตัด

Bevel angle

Edge radius

Ground or polished edge

Edge-chip acceptance criteria

Blackened edge requirements

Coating exclusion

Metallization area

Bonding area

A controlled chamfer or radius can reduce handling damage and make the part easier to install.

For windows used with an O-ring, gasket or adhesive, indicate the actual contact area. This allows the manufacturer to evaluate whether the edge finish and dimensional tolerances are suitable for sealing.

11. Explain the Mounting and Sealing Method

The sapphire window does not operate independently. Its performance can be affected by the surrounding metal, ceramic, polymer or adhesive structure.

Tell the supplier whether the window will be:

Mechanically clamped

Adhesively bonded

Brazed into a metal housing

Metallized and soldered

Sealed with an O-ring

Installed in a vacuum flange

Press-fitted

Overmolded

Used as part of a hermetic package

Include the mating-part drawing when possible.

For sealing applications, provide:

Contact diameter

Gland or groove geometry

วัสดุทำซีล

Compression load

Bolt pattern

Assembly temperature

Maximum pressure differential

Leakage requirement

A sapphire window designed for optical transmission may still fail in service if the mounting design creates excessive localized stress.

12. Describe Pressure, Vacuum and Mechanical Loads

For pressure-bearing windows, specify actual operating conditions rather than only requesting a “high-pressure sapphire window.”

The RFQ should include:

Pressure direction

Maximum operating pressure

Proof pressure

Burst-pressure requirement

Internal or external pressure

Unsupported clear diameter

Mounting and sealing arrangement

Temperature at maximum pressure

Cyclic or continuous loading

Safety factor or governing design standard

The unsupported aperture is especially important because the load on the window depends on the area exposed to the pressure difference.

Where failure could create a safety risk, the final window thickness and mounting design should be validated by the customer’s qualified mechanical engineer.

13. State the Operating Environment

Environmental conditions can affect material selection, coating durability, sealing and inspection requirements.

Provide information about:

Minimum and maximum operating temperature

Thermal cycling

Rapid temperature changes

Vacuum level

Humidity

Salt spray

Outdoor exposure

Chemical contact

Plasma exposure

Abrasive particles

Radiation

Cleaning chemicals

Sterilization method

Installation environment

For example, a sapphire window used in a semiconductor chamber may have very different cleanliness, vacuum and particle-control requirements from a protective window used on an outdoor camera.

14. Include Quantity and Production Stage

The quotation should state whether the order is for:

Engineering samples

Prototype verification

Pilot production

Regular batch production

Annual blanket demand

Replacement parts

Provide:

Initial order quantity

Expected annual quantity

Number of releases

Target delivery date

Forecasted repeat frequency

Whether sample approval is required before mass production

Quantity can affect the manufacturing method, material utilization, fixture design, inspection plan and unit price.

A prototype order may require more engineering work per piece, while repeat production may allow the manufacturer to optimize tooling and inspection procedures.

15. List the Required Quality Documents

Tell the supplier which documents must be delivered with the sapphire windows.

Possible documents include:

Certificate of conformance

Material certificate

Crystal-orientation report

Dimensional inspection report

Surface-quality inspection report

Flatness interferogram

Transmitted wavefront interferogram

Surface-roughness report

Coating transmission or reflection curve

Coating durability report

Laser-damage test report

First article inspection report

Lot traceability record

RoHS or REACH declaration

Packaging inspection record

Request only documents that are relevant to qualification and acceptance.

Additional inspection reports can increase confidence and traceability, but they also add inspection time and cost.

16. Define Packaging and Cleanliness Requirements

Packaging is particularly important for polished and coated sapphire windows.

The RFQ should state:

Individual or bulk packaging

Cleanroom packaging requirement

Double-bagging requirement

Noncontact optical-surface protection

Lens tissue or protective film restrictions

Packaging material restrictions

Particle or cleanliness limits

Label information

Lot separation

Desiccant requirement

Export for direct installation.

Custom Sapphire Window RFQ Checklist

Use the following checklist before sending your quotation.

Common RFQ Mistakes to Avoid

Sending Only a Photograph

A photograph may help explain the application, but it cannot replace a dimensioned drawing.

Requesting “Best Tolerance”

The tightest achievable tolerance is not always the best commercial or engineering choice. Specify the tolerance required by the assembly.

Omitting the Wavelength

The wavelength affects coating design and optical inspection.

Failing to Define the Clear Aperture

Without a clear aperture, cosmetic and optical requirements may be interpreted differently by the customer and manufacturer.

Using “AR Coating” as the Complete Coating Specification

State the wavelength, angle, polarization and required optical performance.

Ignoring the Mounting Method

The window thickness and edge design cannot be evaluated properly without understanding the support and seal arrangement.

Requesting Reports After Production

Inspection and documentation requirements should be included before quotation and order confirmation.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

Can I Request a Quote Without a Finished Drawing?

Yes. A supplier may provide an initial feasibility review based on a sketch, application description and target dimensions.

However, a controlled drawing should normally be approved before production begins.

Is a 3D Model Enough for Quotation?

A 3D model is useful for complex geometry, but it may not contain complete optical tolerances, surface-quality notes or inspection requirements.

Provide a dimensioned 2D drawing whenever possible.

Do I Need to Specify the Sapphire Crystal Orientation?

Specify the orientation when it is required by the optical, polarization, thermal or mechanical design.

For a general protective application, the manufacturer may be able to recommend a suitable orientation.

Why Does the Supplier Need the Annual Quantity?

Annual demand helps the supplier evaluate raw-material planning, fixture investment, inspection strategy and potential volume pricing.

What Information Is Most Important for a Fast Preliminary Quote?

At minimum, provide:

Drawing or dimensioned sketch

Overall dimensions

ปริมาณ

Surface finish

คุณภาพผิว

Flatness or wavefront requirement

ข้อกำหนดเกี่ยวกับชั้นเคลือบ

ความยาวคลื่นการทำงาน

Application and environment

Required documentation

สรุป

An accurate custom sapphire window quote depends on more than diameter, thickness and quantity.

The most effective RFQ combines a controlled engineering drawing with clearly defined optical, mechanical, environmental, coating, inspection and commercial requirements.

Providing complete information at the beginning can help reduce repeated technical questions, avoid specification misunderstandings and shorten the transition from feasibility review to prototype production.

For a custom sapphire window quotation, send your drawing together with the dimensions, quantity, wavelength, surface-quality requirement, coating specification and operating conditions.
